Mariners in Mission
Mariners In Mission (MIM) are enthusiastic committed volunteers that work all over the country. In the fall of 2012 they're coming to Crestfield and you're invited to join their efforts.
The Mariners in Mission will bring a group of 25-30 workers to Crestfield arriving on Sunday, September 30 afternoon and leaving on Friday, October 5 morning with Wednesday afternoon off.
Are you interested in joining the volunteer team for the projects at Crestfield?
If you're interested in joining the efforts, we have two opportunities for you.
- Join the MIM in the service work while they are at Crestfield.
One of the most exciting projects will be the MIM working to finish the basement of our first cottage.
- Put together a quilt block that will be quilted by MIM while they are at Crestfield.
We are asking each church to design, sew and send us a block for a quilt that represents your church. The MIM will quilt the blocks together, putting together a wonderful work of art exemplifying our being bound to one another in Christ. The quilts will be used in our new cottages.
History
The Mariner-in-Mission endeavor began in 1980 when a Mariner couple who had been serving as Mission Volunteers at Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, AK returned and expressed the idea of taking a work team up to the college to help do some much needed maintenance on the campus. 23 people spent 2 weeks in June 1981 doing a variety of jobs such as painting, repairing, roofing, sew- ing, and building. In August of that year the idea was presented to National Mariners at their Annual Cruise (mtg.) and it was accepted. The first official MIM work camp was in 1982 at Ganado College in Ganado, AZ with 29 participants. In 1983, 42 persons participated at Wasatch Academy in Wasatch, UT. The decision was then made to have 2 MIMs in 1984, and later it grew to 3 and sometimes 4 MIM work camps a year. They have served at colleges, seminaries, boarding schools, disaster sights, camp and conference centers from Alaska to Florida, New York to California. As of this writing they have had 80 Mariner-in-Mission work camps and have saved institutions thousands of dollars. The participants furnish their own transportation, pay a nominal fee for their food and the institution provides the housing. At present, they limit participation to no more than 30 persons at each work camp. In 2005 National Presbyterian Mariners and its successor dissolved. Mariners in Mission organized as a Missouri Corporation and continues its mission providing volunteers for camps and conference centers. MIM is associated with PCCCA.
